Blue Planet FAQs
BLUE PLANET RECYCLING
Frequently Asked Questions.
The industrial recycling landscape can be complex and confusing. Blue Planet Recycling is here to help. On this page you will find some common questions asked by our clients. If you have a question that is not covered here, please feel free to contact us.
Getting Started.
How do I begin recycling with Blue Planet?
Simply call us or complete our online contact form with a brief description of your materials, quantities, and location. Our team will review your request and recommend the most efficient recycling or destruction solution.
Do you charge fees, or do I get paid for my materials?
It depends on the material type and market value. We offer rebate programs for high-value materials such as plastics and metals. If recycling costs exceed material value, a service fee applies. Visit our Service Fees & Rebates.
What information should I provide before pickup?
Please include photos, estimated quantities, and material details (type, contamination level, location). This helps us provide accurate pricing, scheduling, and logistics.
Materials & Capabilities.
What types of plastics does Blue Planet accept?
We recycle all industrial plastics numbered #1–#7, including HDPE, LDPE, ABS, PET, PVC, and PP.
Can you recycle contaminated or mixed materials?
Yes, within limits. Our facilities are equipped to separate mixed materials and contaminants. Clean, consistent material streams generate the best rebates and efficiency.
How can I tell what type of plastic I have?
Look for a recycling triangle symbol with a number inside—this identifies the resin type. If unclear, contact us or reference our Plastic Identification Chart.
What products are made from the materials Blue Planet recycles?
Recycled materials are used in film, pipe, sheet extrusion, textiles, and molded products. Organics are used for animal feed or renewable energy; metals reenter industrial production; and glass and wood are repurposed into new construction and manufacturing applications. See our materials pages for more information.
Locations & Service Area.
Where is Blue Planet Recycling located?
Our primary recycling plant is located in Langley, British Columbia, with affiliate partners in major cities around BC and the Pacific Northwest, including Kelowna, Calgary, Edmonton, Seattle, and Portland.
Do you service areas outside of British Columbia?
Yes. We provide regional pickup and recycling programs across Canada, but with freight costs as the primary restraint we service mostly Western Canada and the Pacific Northwest. Large-volume clients can coordinate direct shipments to our nearest facility.
Process & Operations.
What happens to my materials after collection?
Collected materials are transported to our processing facilities, where they are sorted, cleaned, and directed to the most sustainable downstream partner. Each stream is documented, and certificates are issued where applicable.
How does Blue Planet handle organic and food waste recycling?
We collect pre-consumer packaged food waste and remove all packaging before processing. Organics are repurposed into animal feed or bio-based energy, while all packaging materials are recycled. A Certificate of Destruction is provided to verify full brand protection.
What is “waste-to-energy,” and when is it used?
Waste-to-energy is used for materials that cannot be mechanically or economically recycled. Through partnerships with Geocycle Canada, qualified residual waste is transformed into energy and recovered minerals through co-processing in cement kilns—achieving zero landfill waste.
Pricing, Rebates & Value.
What determines the rebate value of my materials?
Material value depends on several factors:
• Material type (e.g., Aluminum or ABS plastics are more valuable than Steel or LDPE)
• Quantity and consistency
• Cleanliness and contamination level
• Proximity to one of our facilities
• Current commodity market pricing
When can I expect payment or an invoice?
Rebates are typically processed after materials are received, graded, and verified. For fee-based services, invoices are issued following collection or destruction.
Can Blue Planet batch smaller loads together for rebate eligibility?
Yes. When possible, we consolidate compatible small batches with other clients’ materials to improve processing efficiency and value return.
Policies & Limitations.
What materials cannot be accepted?
We cannot accept household recycling, retail Styrofoam, or post-consumer waste. For hazardous waste, only approved industrial streams under TDG certification can be handled. See our Hazardous Waste page for more information.
Do you recycle electronics or batteries?
Yes. Blue Planet Recycling accepts industrial batteries and electronics in larger quantities, such as forklift batteries and equipment components from manufacturing or logistics operations. We do not accept consumer small-volume batteries or electronics (less than 4,000 kg). For household items or small devices, please contact your local recycling depot or municipal e-waste program.
Can Blue Planet recycle or destroy confidential products or documents?
Yes. Our Product Destruction & Brand Protection programs include witnessed or certified destruction for sensitive materials. We also provide secure document and film recycling for healthcare and imaging clients.
Company & Sustainability.
How does Blue Planet decide where recycled materials are sent?
Blue Planet prioritizes recycling and resale within the closest and most efficient markets to minimize freight costs and environmental impact. Whenever possible, recovered materials are processed and reused within North America, supporting regional manufacturing and reducing the carbon footprint associated with long-distance shipping.
What sustainability standards or certifications does Blue Planet follow?
We adhere to all provincial and federal environmental regulations and work only with licensed downstream partners. Our operations support clients’ ESG, carbon-reduction, and circular-economy goals.
What makes Blue Planet different from other industrial recyclers?
Unlike traditional recyclers, Blue Planet focuses exclusively on industrial and pre-consumer waste, maintaining full chain-of-custody documentation, regional processing, and zero-landfill outcomes.
How does Blue Planet support the circular economy?
We recover, repurpose, and resupply materials into new domestic products—keeping resources in use for longer and minimizing the demand for virgin materials.
Does Blue Planet work with municipalities or government contracts?
Yes, we provide tailored recycling and waste-to-energy programs for municipal and institutional clients under regulated frameworks.
Can I visit your facilities?
Yes. We welcome clients to visit our processing facilities by appointment to observe our recycling and destruction processes firsthand. Transparency is central to how we operate.
